Skully’s Music-Diner Upgrades to QSC KLA Series Line Array

Ohio Nightlife Institution Offers Better Sound to Their Hip Hop and Rock Fan Base

Columbus, OH (May 30, 2012) -- Skully’s Music-Diner, the hip hop and rock night spot here consistently voted the best place for dancing and live music over the past decade by several local entertainment magazines, has upgraded its sound system with a new QSC KLA Series active line array loudspeaker system

According to the venue’s house engineer Luke Wells, who notes that Skully’s prides itself on having the best and latest technology in audio, video and lighting systems, the new KLA system has significantly improved the sound quality as well as the coverage.

“The KLA’s sound is clear as day, front to back,” Wells reports. “The new QSC system is like night and day from what we used to have. I’ve had compliments from guest engineers since we installed the KLA system.”

The new KLA system, comprising four flown KLA12 12-inch, two-way loudspeakers per side, was installed principally in order to improve coverage to Skully’s upstairs balcony area. Wells adds, “Coverage was really an issue; and adding a line array really made sense to reach all the areas and the balcony.”

“With the KLA we got to hear how great the coverage was before we bought it, and the demo pretty much sold it for us,“ adds Wells, noting the demo of the system by J.C. Bittence from TechRep Marketing, the QSC rep firm in the region. Skully’s already had good experience with the company’s other products, having used QSC amplifiers to drive some of its monitor wedges.

Skully’s purchased the KLA rig from Sound Ideas, Inc., a local retailer of pro audio, DJ, lighting and video equipment.

In addition to regular DJ and dance nights every week, Skully’s also promotes local bands and, just during the last 12 months, has hosted national touring acts such as Zola Jesus, Heartless Bastards, Talib Kweli, Gogol Bordello and Cannibal Corpse. “The Black Keys have played a couple of times,” adds Wells, who reports that the venue focuses mainly on hip-hop and indie rock artists.

Skully’s has been a nightlife institution in Columbus for the past 20 years, originally on the campus of Ohio State University and now in the city’s Short North neighborhood, just a few blocks from OSU. The venue has been voted the #1 dance club in Columbus for the past ten straight years. In May 2012, readers of local entertainment magazine Columbus Alive voted Skully’s the Best Place for Rock ‘n’ Roll, Best Place for Hip-Hop and Best DJ Night, for Thursday night’s Ladies ‘80s, the longest running weekly dance party in the city. Skully’s was also recently voted Best Dance Club in 614 Magazine’s ColumBEST 2012.
