Jason Bourne Premieres with QSC Sound

QSC Headquarters, Costa Mesa, CA (August 11, 2016) - When scouting for a location for the premiere of Jason Bourne, Universal Pictures chose Las Vegas, an obvious choice since it’s the scene of the film’s climactic and chaotic car chase. But finding a venue large and grand enough to launch the film was another matter – there aren’t many movie theatres that can accommodate the thousands of celebrities and industry insiders expected to attend.  Knowing that CinemaCon, the theatrical exhibition industry’s largest trade event, is held each year at Caesars Palace and that screenings are successfully done in the Colosseum, Universal felt confident that the 4,000 seat venue could provide a fitting launch pad for the new $120 million action thriller.  The bigger challenge: the Colosseum was never built as a movie theatre.  Converting the massive room from a live performance…

Cinema Tech Tip: Looks Can Be Deceiving - VGA vs DataPort

It may look like any old VGA video connector, but it’s not. DCA and ISA Series amplifiers and DCP, DCM, and DXP processors use a special QSC connection interface called DataPort, which enables DSP crossovers, speaker-specific EQ, and monitoring and control of amplifier and loudspeaker functions on a single cable. Although many off-the-shelf VGA cables may work with satisfactory results, the QSC DataPort specification requires that all 15 pin conductors be present and that all audio I/O conductors be shielded. Many VGA cables use only 7 pins. If pins 5 or 10 are tied to ground, damage to amplifier may result. Therefore, only QSC supplied DataPort cables should be used.

Cinema Tech Tip: No Tilt Required

The mid-high frequency section of most 3- and 4-way QSC screen channel loudspeakers has a pre-set downward tilt. When it is properly elevated to approximately 5/8 image height behind the screen and aimed to the last row in a typical stadium-style cinema, there is no need for additional downward tilt. This allows you to minimize the distance from the horn to the screen, and keep it flush within a baffle wall.

Cinema Tech Tip: What does “Axisymmetric” really mean?

All QSC SR Series surround loudspeakers feature Axisymmetric coverage. That means that sound is distributed evenly on all axes within the loudspeaker’s defined coverage angle. Unlike many conventional loudspeakers, there is no vertical and horizontal coverage pattern, so aiming is made much simpler. Up/down tilt and side-to-side “pan” aiming is all that is needed to cover any area in a cinema.

    New compact Subwoofer

At ShowEast 2015, QSC introduced the latest in its line of compact, space-saving subwoofers. The new QSC SB-2180 subwoofer is the thinnest dual 18 inch subwoofer on the market.  Each driver is loaded into its own internal chamber. An ingenious folded port design minimizes cabinet depth, yet still provides full port volume.  The port also acts as internal bracing, creating a stiffer, less resonant cabinet. All of this allows the enclosure to be at least 20% thinner than any other dual 18” subwoofer you can buy, occupying up to 40% less floor space in your theatre.  In a multi-theatre complex, that extra square footage translates into more revenue-generating seating or concession space.  And, you can stack four on a shipping pallet, significantly reducing freight costs. “Conventional thinking says that subwoofers must be large, refrigerator-sized enclosures,” says Barry…

    QSC in World's First Cinema

QSC Cinema products are installed in the recently refurbished Eden Theatre in La Ciotat, France.  The Eden Theatre is an historic landmark where the Lumière brothers screened one of their first moving pictures in 1896 - "The Arrival of a Train at La Ciotat Station (L'Arrivée d'un train en gare de La Ciotat)". In fact, legend has it that the audience were so terrified by the moving images of the steam locomotive that some of them leapt from their seats to flee the train. And this was 30 years before sound on film!    Today, the theatre is refitted with state-of the-art digital projection and sound, including QSC cinema loudspeakers and power amplifiers.  The July/August edition of Theatre World includes a feature article on the entire project.

Important Reminder: Update firmware on DPA Series amplifiers and Q-SYS Cores DPA and DPA-Q Series amplifiers are a revolutionary advancement in amplifier technology.  As with any software-controlled electronics, it is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you regularly check for the latest version software and firmware.  This will ensure that you have access to the latest features and that any “bugs” or other operational irregularities are resolved before they become problematic.   For DPA Series Amplifiers There are two software tools for updating DPA amplifiers: Amplifier Navigator and Amp Restore Utility.  Amplifier Navigator updates the amplifier’s firmware to the current firmware version and preserves all user-defined presets (50 in total). Amp Restore Utility will restore the firmware image to factory default.  That means all user-defined presets (50 in total) are…

New Videos Address Real-World Amplifier Specifications

In a new video recently released by QSC Cinema, Barry Ferrell, the company’s Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer, provides a tutorial and demonstration of the power output capabilities of the new DPA/DPA-Q amplifier platform. “With the advent of immersive audio and the need for high powered surround loudspeakers, we’ve seen a fair amount of ‘overspecification’, where amplifiers are sized larger than they need to be for most common cinema applications,” says Ferrell.  “Part of this comes from a misunderstanding of amplifier performance and specifications.”  The video provides an overview of QSC’s new Class D amplifier platform, which is used in the DPA/DPA-Q cinema amplifiers and the CXD/CXD-Q and PLD series professional audio amplifiers.  Because of the platform’s extremely DC high voltage rails and regulated power supply, the amplifiers are able to…
