Suffolk County Community College Graduates to Better Sound with QSC

Brentwood, NY, (January 10, 2012) - Suffolk County Community College, located on Long Island, NY, has installed a completely new QSC sound system in its 60,000-square-foot field house that includes WideLine(tm) line array loudspeakers, PowerLight(tm) Series amplifiers and SC28 processors. The college, part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system, sought to improve quality from rented sound systems that were unable to overcome the less than ideal acoustics at this sports and exhibition complex here.

"I've been a QSC fan forever," says system designer/installer Dominick Campana, General Manager of Pro Sound Alliance, a division of Live Sound, Inc., based in Troy, NY. "We had a strict deadline to get things completed so I had to go with a system that I felt very comfortable with, and I have been working with QSC for many years. For the last 15 years they've been one of very few companies that have always been extremely consistent in both the quality of their products as well as delivering exactly what they promise."

Tasked with designing a sound system that could be easily configured for the variety of events typically held at the multi-use facility, Campana and his crew installed a total of 16 WideLine-10 (WL2102-w-WH) wide dispersion line array speakers, 14 WideLine-8 (WL3082-WH) ultra compact line array modules and two WL212-sw-WH ultra compact subwoofers. Two PL325, six PL340 and five PL380 amplifiers power the system, all optimized by three SC28 processors. The speakers were flown using two AF-2102-LA-WH large array and three AF3082-S-WH small array frames and an EB3082-WH extension bar.

The venue can seat more than 4,000 people for graduation ceremonies and an eight-per-side WideLine-10 system handles the full house. A single, six-module WideLine-8 array provides coverage to the venue's east side for trade shows while special events, such as conferences and seminars, are handled by just the top four boxes of an eight-module WideLine-8 on the west side. For center court basketball games, the full eight-module WideLine-8 array, with WL212 subs flown behind the mains, delivers powerhouse sound. All the speakers and flying hardware are finished in white to match the aesthetics of the athletic center.

"As far as the system goes, I'm in heaven!" states Neftali Collazo, director, special events and programs, SUNY Suffolk, who worked with the school's audio expert, Ray Reardon, technical director, Department of Theater Arts, to bring the new system to the field house. "Everything was so perfect. There were no hiccups, no problems at all. Dominick and his crew were phenomenal; I would recommend them to anybody."

The space was a challenge, acknowledges Campana, since it features reflective, parallel walls, a hardwood floor and a ceiling height of over 40 feet, with a sloping steel roof that also has a shallow curve. But, he says, "The EASE modeling software for the QSC WideLines was extremely accurate and made the installation much easier and more effective than it would have been if starting from scratch. The rigging frame pick point information was also very useful and time saving. It made it really easy to model pick points on the frames and position everything vertically in the venue in the most effective way, and keep it off the walls."

"As both the designer and the installer," adds Campana, "I am extremely pleased with the outcome that QSC has helped us achieve. And more importantly, the customer is very pleased and has received compliments from everyone involved."

The QSC system was purchased from Scott Price at ProAudio.com in Ft. Worth, TX, and installed by the company's design/build division, Church Audio Video.

In the main sanctuary at Mundo de Fe, which seats approximately 1,500 people, the KLA system is flown in two hangs, each comprising four KLA12 12-inch, two-way, loudspeakers. Six KLA181 18-inch subwoofers are ground-stacked, three per side. There are also three K12 12-inch, two-way active loudspeakers installed in a distributed ring providing delay coverage.

The QSC speaker system offers plenty of headroom to the church, which puts the emphasis on music in its services. "They are a modern, rock 'n' roll, Hispanic church, and it's very high energy," comments Jeff McLeod, Managing Director for Church Audio Video.

"As a church, we are so happy with the QSC K Series Line Array," states Tim Holland, Pastor of LifeChurch/Mundo de Fe. "In my mind, there is no better quality available on the market at this price point. The sound is powerful yet clear. Our church is very pleased with this QSC product. It rocks!"

As McLeod relates, ProAudio.com's Price contacted Church Audio Video shortly after making the sale to have the integration division install the QSC system. "Flying the KLA12 speakers took next to no time, he says: "It was real easy. Using the KLA AF12 Array Frames made it effortless."

Award-Winning Folk Ensemble Bellowhead Relies on QSC K Series for U.K. Tour

Costa Mesa, California, December 2011 - Bellowhead, a U.K.-based folk ensemble and darlings of the European festival circuit, relied on QSC K Series active loudspeakers - ten K10s and two K12s - as on-stage monitors throughout their recently completed tour of England, in support of last year's 'Hedonism' album. The much-fêted band, four times named Best Live Act at BBC Radio 2's annual Folk Awards, are expert live performers and needed powerful and reliable on-stage monitoring system for their recent tour.

The band's FOH engineer for the tour was Alistair McGibbon, known to many through his experience working with bands ranging from folksters Nizlopi to Budgie and Black Sabbath. McGibbon was Bellowhead's FOH engineer on 24 festival dates earlier in the year, but this was the first time he had been on tour with them, playing nightly over three consecutive weeks. While the band was reliant on each venue's FOH system, McGibbon was keen that they have a consistent stage monitoring system throughout the tour.

Familiar with a variety of other QSC products, McGibbon had not seen the company's K Series active loudspeakers until earlier in the year. "I was doing the audio at a conference, which finished with a live band. They brought in a set of K8s and I just thought, 'How are we going to get a decent sound with these tiny things?' And then I was amazed at what came out of them, given their size. I liked the design, as well as, the built-in handles and the low weight. So when I needed something for Bellowhead, K Series seemed the obvious choice!"

"There was a huge variety of venues on this tour, acoustically speaking, from small clubs to big, old, former music halls like the Shepherd's Bush Empire in London," says McGibbon. "And with eleven members in the band, sound-checking with Bellowhead is a fairly complicated and time-consuming business. I knew that it would be impossible to get them a decent on-stage sound each night in the time available unless we had some elements on stage that stayed the same throughout the tour. I needed something light, portable and powerful, and on a reasonable budget. The K Series fit the bill."

Nine K10s were supplied by Shure Distribution UK for band members, with a tenth at the house desk. Bellowhead's brass bassist, Ed Neuhauser, who plays the mighty Sousaphone and the tuba-like Helicon, was provided a K12, as was drummer/percussionist Pete Flood.

Post-tour, McGibbon believes that he has found the compact portable system the band have been looking for to handle their future tours. "I think the K Series is the most portable monitoring system I've ever seen," he explains. "Every night, we just took them down and put them straight in the van, ready to go to the next date - simple. And they really pack a punch."
"The tour has gone really well, with five-star reviews,' adds McGibbon, "so I hope we'll be using the K Series loudspeakers again on next year's European tour!"

By Dan Ferrisi
QSC is a company whose name should be familiar to just about anybody who works in any segment of the audio industry, from the commercial fixed-install portion, with which this writer was closely aligned during a six-and-a-half-year tenure with Sound & Communications, sister publication to The Music & Sound Retailer, to the MI portion, of which all of us are part today. Joe Pham, President/CEO, granted The Retailer a detailed, wideranging interview during which he discussed his background and career trajectory, QSC's evolving product portfolio, the company's secrets to business success and the state of the market during this turbulent economic time. There is a whole lot to cover, and plenty to learn. Read on….

-The Retailer: To start, can you tell me a bit about your personal background, particularly as it relates to a love of audio or music? Have you always been interested in audio?
Joe Pham: The short answer is yes. I love audio. I taught myself guitar at age 13. I played in a high school band and, during rehearsals, the drummer and I would always switch instruments. Needless to say, I am a bad guitar player and an even worse drummer. Nevertheless, I just love being around music and audio.

-The Retailer: Can you tell me about your career, in terms of where you began and where you are now?
Joe Pham: I have a technical background, earning my PhD in Electrical Engineering at UCLA. I taught Electrical Engineering at UCLA and then joined McKinsey & Company, a global consulting firm. After four years at McKinsey, I realized I needed to pursue my passion for audio, so I left McKinsey and joined QSC. I joined QSC in 2004 as our SVP, Chief Strategy and Technology Officer. In 2007, I became our Chief Operating Officer. In 2010, I became our President and CEO.

-The Retailer: What are your day-to-day responsibilities and duties within QSC? What is the biggest way in which you contribute to the continuing success of the company?
Joe Pham: I view my role as simply working with the team here to build a great organization. An organization that is strategically sound, financially solid and operationally efficient. This is the "Business Smarts" side of what we do. It is also extremely important to me personally that we are "Organizationally Healthy." By this, I mean QSC is a place where people are growing, working together, and are genuinely engaged and excited to bring forth their best. If each day we can make small progress toward these goals, then I am going home with a smile.

-The Retailer: Let's talk about QSC in broad strokes. I'd like to get an overview of the company, talking about its founding, development and growth to become the force it is today.
Joe Pham: QSC was founded in 1968 by Pat Quilter as a guitar amplifier company. Pat, along with Barry Andrews and John Andrews, built the business and the foundation of QSC. By the late 1990s, QSC had established itself as a leading power amplifier company in the industry. In the last 10-plus years, we've worked hard to transform ourselves into a full systems provider. Currently, our business segments include power amplifiers, loudspeakers, networked audio control, transport and DSP. Soon, we will be entering the mixer market.

-The Retailer: Why did the company, a number of years ago, delve into the loudspeaker market? Were the products then available insufficient for the market's needs? Was it just an opportunity that had to be capitalized on?
Joe Pham: QSC has always been an organization of growth and change. The loudspeaker segment at that time was the next natural stage of growth for QSC. Barry, John and Pat had studied the segment and believed there was an attractive opportunity. Additionally, powered loudspeakers were becoming more prevalent in the market, which is a threat to an amplifier company if you're not able to respond to that market trend. Thus, our entry into the segment was partly due to market opportunity and a powered loudspeaker trend, but more so from a continuing philosophy of growth for the organization.

-The Retailer: When you look at QSC as it currently exists, of what would you say you're the proudest? What makes your company stand apart not only from competitors in the market, but also from all manufacturers?
Joe Pham: You know, if you're looking for the one thing, I will always point to our people. I spoke earlier about "Organizational Health." We simply have great people. Phenomenal talent. More importantly, we genuinely care for one another and really- and I mean really-work together as a team. I don't want to say that we're one big, happy family, because, one, it's not true and, two, that's just goofy. But there is a level of care here that does remind you of family. And that is something extremely special, not only in our industry but in the workplace in general, too.

-The Retailer: Obviously, QSC is involved with a number of market segments. I formerly covered your fixed-install side.
Can you tell me how QSC intersects with the MI space and why it's important for music store owners to know about QSC products?
Joe Pham: The MI/entertainer space is one of our key segments. In each segment that we compete in, we strive to deliver products that meet customer needs and deliver service and support that exceed expectations. We offer a compelling line of products for the musician/DJ/entertainer customer base and, in the U.S., there is considerable and trusted data that shows QSC as the leading manufacturer of sound-reinforcement products in terms of dollars sold. Today, these include RMX and GX amplifiers, as well as K Series and KW Series loudspeakers. We also recognize that a large and growing percentage of our retail dealers also provide some measure of contractor and installed- sound support, be it selling installation-type products to contractors or acting in a design and install capacity themselves. Often, entities like houses of worship or other organizations have need of some kind of pro audio gear and, after not finding what they need at RadioShack , are inclined to check out their local music store where they may encounter QSC products specific to their needs.

-The Retailer: In the audio and music segments, there are often a great number of creative individuals who work within manufacturers. Would you say the QSC team is a very creative one?
Joe Pham: Very much so. QSC is a fun environment where people are encouraged to shine and "unleash" their creativity. Creativity manifests itself differently across the organization. For example, in engineering, it's innovation while, in marketing, it's creativity in the more traditional definition. Regardless, whether you call it creativity, innovation or simply having fun, it is a big part of our identity.

-The Retailer: So, are there a lot of musicians…a lot of people who, in their own personal time, might be involved in bands, or formerly were, or were roadies? Does QSC have people who are very much plugged into the music segment?
Joe Pham: Yes, absolutely! Whenever we have company parties, there are usually four or five bands that are formed within the organization. I have to tell you: There are so many great musicians in the company. We recently had a company Celebration this summer. Pat Quilter was on stage playing with several employees and Gerry Tschetter band headlined the evening. Both bands were great. Gerry, who is our VP of Marketing, is always sending e-mails to the entire company "plugging" his band. Now I know why: They are really, really good!

-The Retailer: Shine a light on some of your latest technological and product developments. Going forward, what are you going to be pushing most aggressively? What do you have in the pipeline that you might want to preview for us? I'd also like to know why you feel these products are important additions to the market.
Joe Pham: We've recently introduced the KLA Series line array, which is the latest addition to our "House of K" family of products. Like the K Series and KW Series, the KLA Series features a 1,000- watt power module, advanced DSP, simple yet powerful user configuration and a very high performance-to-value ratio. But, most importantly, they simply sound fantastic. And, in keeping true to the K Family paradigm, the KLA Series can very effectively be mixed and matched with its siblings in countless ways to suit a very broad range of both portable and installed-sound applications. The K Family is really representative of our direction today and into the future. Because we maintain amplifier, loudspeaker and DSP disciplines under one roof, with teams working together on a given project, the resulting finished product is QSC has vastly expanded from its grassroots beginnings, all the while maintaining its core founding values. more compelling than a patchwork of individual technologies. Many people think of integrated systems solely as a collection of products networked together, but integrated systems can also take the form factor of a single box. Given the response we've received on the K Family thus far, our customers seem to be quite accepting of our single-box solutions.

-The Retailer: Now, obviously, the integrated systems provider element is very important to you. It's something that's been emphasized. Can you explain why the mixer segment is particularly ripe for entry? Are there particular things about that segment that make you believe now is the time to take advantage of it?
Joe Pham: We've studied the segment and, yes, we believe there is an opportunity for us to apply QSC technologies to mixers in a way that will really excite the user. The teams that we've assembled to work on our mixer offerings are nothing short of world class, and we feel we're going to offer unique values that will set us apart from competitors.
Like the loudspeaker segment 10 years ago, the mixer segment is the next natural growth area for us in our transformation to an integrated systems provider. There are magical things that technology can bring to the audio signal after the microphone and before the human ear. That's what really excites us.

-The Retailer: Can you tell us a bit about what you're going to have going on as far as trade shows in the next six months or so? What do you have planned?
Joe Pham: We will be exhibiting at a number of shows. On the MI side of the business, we'll be exhibiting at Winter NAMM and MusikMesse/Prolight + Sound, as well as at a number of regional events, both domestic and international.

-The Retailer: What is your philosophy when it comes to working with dealers and the dealer channel? Would you say working closely with dealers is a big part of QSC's approach to business?
Joe Pham: Without our dealers, there would be no business. We recognize the significant role our channel partners play in representing QSC products, and we value those relationships immeasurably. We've been in business for more than 43 years, and we have quite a few dealers who have been with us for almost that long. We try our best every day to be the kind of vendor partner our dealers view as a long-term relationship. QSC will likely never be the lowest-cost, highest- margin or fastest-turn line in the dealers' portfolios. But we do feel very strongly that a formula comprised of great products of lasting value, comprehensive sales training and tools, compelling marketing, and unparalleled service and support provides a business relationship environment that fosters trust, growth and loyalty. To be successful, you have to recognize the need for change when it's indicated, or you'll be left in your competitors' dust. However, you also need to stand firm in your core values, the essence of your unique selling proposition, if you intend to define your brand. Our goal with our dealers is to be a valued, long-term partner and their favorite call of the day.

-The Retailer: Is there anything that the dealer channel could do that would be helpful to you, as a manufacturer? Do you have any suggestions to give the channel, which would help them sell QSC products even better?
Joe Pham: Understanding the QSC brand goes a long way in selling the brand. We hear time and time again from front-line salespeople that they love selling QSC because it's a one-way transaction. That is, it's very rare that a QSC product comes back due to failure or other defects that would negate a sale. That's their commission on the line and it's really painful to give back what they've earned. The customer who buys QSC understands the value of the product in terms of performance and reliability. Our six-year warranty really backs that up. QSC is a professional product for customers that derive income from its use. There's a lot of great product out there, and it's a big job for salespeople to keep up with every product in terms of features, operation and comparison to similar items. But, today, great product is table stakes. The salespeople who sell QSC as a professional tool that makes their customers money and allows them to sleep better
at night sleep better themselves, as well.

-The Retailer: Economic times during the past few years have been generally difficult. How well has QSC weathered the continuing economic storm? What proactive steps has the company taken to minimize its economy-related pain?
Joe Pham: Let me talk a little bit about 2008. Before the economic crash was evident, we saw many leading indicators that caused us great concern. We acted quickly to put together a multi-faceted plan. I personally met with every QSC employee in small group settings in order to answer all questions, be completely transparent and communicate the plan of how we were going to get through an economic meltdown. Because of our culture, we were able to have very open and honest conversations throughout the entire company. I don't want to get into the specifics of the plan, but it did center on continually serving our customers, not wavering from our strategic direction and it called upon the entire organization really to work together to power through the economy. Let's face it: People were terrified about losing their jobs. We put one goal ahead of any other, and that was to take care of the people and get through the recession without losing one job. And that's exactly what we did. I am so proud to say that, because of the team we have here, we have powered through the recession without losing one job. On the contrary, we've added many new people and have created many new positions over the last few years. Today, we are stronger than ever, currently operating at all-time highs in many metrics.

-The Retailer: Being able to say that you powered through it without losing a single job is, I think, something that very few organizations could say. So, certainly, that's something that's laudable.
Joe Pham: All of that is possible because of our core values and company culture. In times of crisis, people more than ever deserve to be treated with respect and dignity. The first responsibility of management is to communicate openly and honestly. Employees deserve to understand what's going on. They want to believe that management has their best interests in mind, and they want to know what they can do to help the company. I truly believe in the power of people. Never has it been more evident than in the last few years.

-The Retailer: Since QSC is involved in so many market segments, I'd like to get your "state of the union" for the industry, particularly with an accent on the MI space. Do you feel as though we're in growth mode, in contraction mode or just kind of idling? How would you judge the space overall?
Joe Pham: If you look at the broader economy, most will agree that it's going to be an extremely slow recovery at best. While there are key fundamental differences in the economy today versus 2008, what seems to be common is a high degree of uneasiness at the consumer level. Consumer sentiment and confidence are obviously critical factors in the MI space. I think we need to be realistic and understand that any recovery will be slow. With this economic outlook, manufacturers will need to figure out how to deliver even more value to the end consumer. Dealers will need to do the same. In the end, I do believe it will be a battle for the consumer dollar.

-The Retailer: What does the future hold for QSC? Do you foresee any major changes or shifts in terms of products, market segments, business relationships or company strategy? What can we expect to see?
Joe Pham: That's a really interesting question. QSC has always been about delivering high-performance, high-quality products, backed by comprehensive and responsive service that you can count on. That formula has worked extremely well for us the last 43 years. That is not going to change. Our core values won't change. Neither will our company culture, which entails working hard, working together and having fun. All of this is a part of our identity and a part of the foundation that Pat, Barry and John built. It is the foundation upon which we continue to build. At the same time, though, QSC has always been an organization of growth and change. And that is going to continue. So, will there be change? Yes, because there's always been change. Have I confused you? I think this is why there are so many songs with the lyric, "The more things change, the more they stay the same."

With the former system, congregation members sitting in the corners, on the balconies and underneath them weren't able to hear the sermons. After visiting the church several times and analyzing the audio problems, Aviwork recommended KLA as the solution.

"I have been interested in the KLA System since its recent release. It's got an easy rigging system, a good price point and it sounds great," says Hosung Leem, Senior A/V Consultant at Aviwork. "Believe it or not, I didn't even hear the KLA System before recommending it to the church. I didn't have to -- I have had so many good experiences with QSC loudspeakers that I already knew the KLA Series would be great."

With the KLA's innovative SOLO(tm) (Single Operator Logistics) rigging system, which allows the line array to be deployed in a fraction of the time of comparable systems without the use of special tools or rigging hardware, the ease of installation was also everything that Leem expected.

"The church insisted on structurally sound equipment as a measure of earthquake protection, and the KLA's rigging system is both solid and easy to do, " adds Leem. "I get compliments all the time about the great sound from congregation members. "
The new KLA System has certainly pleased the pastors as well. "Previously, we had another manufacturer's loudspeakers in the main sanctuary, but these only covered certain areas, and missed areas like the corners of the room and the second floor, " says Young Suk Cho, Music Pastor at the Church. " With the new KLA System, all areas of the sanctuary are completely covered with adequate volume. Now you can hear everything in every remote part of the room."

About Aviwork
The newly formed Aviwork, Inc. is the result of a merger of two companies that have been providing integrated A/V solutions for many years, ITG Pro and UBI-TECH. The public event celebrated Parliament's naming of two new landmarks, the “Simone Veil Agora,” to honor former EP president Simone Veil and the “Solidarność 1980 Esplanade,” to acknowledge the important Solidarność union movement in Europe's recent history.

Belgian audio visual company GSF Event were the project managers for the concert, and were selected by the event organizer Jerome Urbain from Tipik after their very successful delivery of a smaller show on the same site earlier in the year. According to GSF co-founder Sammy Freh, GSF managed the sound and lighting for this large scale show, with Stageco working with them to provide the staging infrastructure.

“We knew we needed a lot of power to drive the PA and provide enough coverage for this audience of around 3,000 people assembled between the ASP building and Place du Luxembourg,” says Freh. “For us, QSC was the logical choice.”GSF selected 13 of QSC's PowerLight 3 flagship 8000 W PL380 amplifiers to drive the PA system and monitors, which also included four QSC K12 12", 2-Way 1000 W active loudspeakers, acting as front fills.

Freh himself has a long history with the QSC brand, buying his first QSC amplifier, a USA 850, 20 years ago. “QSC is the brand I've used ever since,” he says. Over the years, GSF has subsequently stocked each new generation of QSC amplifiers - including MX series, PL2, PLX2 and now PL3. The company also has a number of K12 loudspeakers in their hire inventory, which Sammy describes as an excellent multi-purpose loudspeaker.

Above all, GSF chooses QSC time after time for the company's great support and the reliability of the products. “ When we provide sound reinforcement for speeches in the European Parliament we need to be 100% certain of our products; with live broadcast on different European TV stations there is no place for failure,” adds Frey. “Throughout the entire 20 years we have received wonderful support from AED, the QSC (Benelux) distributors. We love the QSC brand because they offer the most reliable products that we have ever seen.”

Certainly on August 30th GSF delivered a high class technical system which provided top quality sound and lighting throughout the entire square for the day's events. In fact, their work was so impressive that the GSF team was personally invited by EP president Jerzy Buzek to a reception at the 'Cabinet du President' on the 11th floor of the European Parliament, where they were officially congratulated for their work.

Designer and installer Bob Athey designed and built the A/V and control systems for the massive club, and chose QSC's Q-Sys™ Integrated System Platform and PowerLightÔ amplifiers as the system backbone for the entire complex.

The 45,000 square foot club spans two levels, with a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces. The 15,000 square foot main room, with its large spiral staircase and 10-ft tall marble fireplace, features an elevated DJ booth and giant LED screen that spans the entire length of the back wall. The 10,000 square foot Chateau Terrace, overlooking the strip, boasts another DJ booth, VIP Cabanas, Terrace Bar and dance floor. And the 20,000 square foot Chateau Gardens, reachable via a set of glass elevators, features a rooftop dance floor, four more bars, a third DJ booth and thousands of lights. All in all, the Chateau complex encompasses more than 30 zones of audio, all networked together via Q-Sys.

"Q-Sys controls the whole thing -- all the zones, throughout the bars, dance floors, and all the surrounding areas, all the cable boxes go into it, all the background music sources, "says Athey. " We chose Q-Sys because of its great ability to expand the software and hardware into the future. Chateau is continually growing its audio and video capabilities - adding another big screen or a new audio zone. With Q-Sys, we don't have to spend time adding components or routers; it's so easy.”

Chateau also features more than 50 QSC PowerLight amplifiers, which Athey chose for their superior sound quality. "The PowerLights are the best sounding amplifiers for network based audio,” he adds, "Together with Q-Sys as part of a whole package, QSC helped us meet our goals for the audio system as well as our budget.”

Athey continues to add onto the A/V capability at Chateau, and is in the process of adding more Q-Sys Cores and I/Os to give them the ability to "route anything anywhere”. At present, Chateau has one Q-Sys Core 1000 but will have two Core 3000's as the club expands into the future.

Covenant Church Has Faith in QSC’s New KLA Series Line Array System

House of Worship Buys QSC's New Line Array System without an Audition

Carrollton, TX -- Covenant Church has become the first House of Worship in the U.S. to purchase QSC's new KLA Series fixed arcuate active line array system, for use across its five Dallas area campuses. The new system, which is intended for deployment at indoor and outdoor special events, comprises six KLA12 two-way, 12-inch loudspeakers and four KLA181 18-inch subwoofers.

The 20,000-member church also added six K12 two-way, 12-inch active loudspeakers for use as out fill or stage monitors with the KLA Series system, depending on the type and size of the event. All the five campuses share the new system, which can be reserved by each location for special events such as dances, seasonal festivals and music performances.

Covenant Church bought the KLA System, introduced by QSC earlier this year, based upon their audio departments' exemplary experience with QSC products. “We literally bought the KLAs without auditioning them,” says Slade Goplin, chief technical engineer/project coordinator for Covenant Church's audio department. “We have some of QSC's HPR Series and quite a few of the K12s, and we've always been extremely happy with the products. So we already believed that the KLAs would be great.”

Covenant's audio team got to use -- and hear -- the new KLA Series System for the first time at the church's annual Block Party outdoor event in late July. “They set up a big stage and we hung three KLA12 boxes per side off of the truss and had the four KLA181 subs on the ground. When we plugged them in, we were really impressed at how powerful they were - and how great they sounded. “

Goplin and the audio team also took advantage of the benefits of the KLA's SOLO(tm) (Single Operator Logistics) rigging system which allows the system to be deployed in a fraction of the time required by comparable line array systems, without the need for special tools or hardware. “I put the arrays together by myself, “adds Goplin.” I hung one box by some straps to the truss, and then I just grabbed a second box, held it up with one hand, and put the two latches down. That was it.”

Like all the K Family Models, the KLA Series features efficient 1000 W Class-D amplifier modules, allowing up to five K Family products to be used on a single 15A/120V circuit. At the Block Party, the Covenant audio team took the chance to test this efficiency first-hand. “We ran all the speakers off of four 20 amp circuits, “ Goplin says,” I thought we'd need more but we just plugged it in and see if we blew any breakers - but we didn't!”
The Covenant team also was impressed with the KLA's ability to withstand a harsh outdoor environment. “We started setting up at 10 a.m. and were all set up by noon, with all the speakers sitting out in the sun, on a 110 degree day,” Goplin adds. “I said to myself -- since the KLAs can take this, then we're good to go.”

Of course, the audio team at Covenant Church already had lots of experience with QSC products to base their decision on. For the past three years or so, they have had a number of HPR 153s with subs in their youth room and a few K10s with subs for the lounge area. “There's something going on in the youth rooms every single day, either music or a band - and believe me, the systems take harsh abuse,” adds Goplin. “In all of the places here at Covenant where we use QSC products, we have never, ever had a single issue. “

About Covenant Church
Covenant Church is a non-denominational Christian Church which offers a diverse, multicultural atmosphere filled with vibrant worship, ministering to people from a wide variety of backgrounds. Covenant strives to demonstrate a spirit of excellence in all they do, with generosity in the giving of their time and talent. The mission of Covenant is to consistently grow and develop and to increase the Kingdom of God through a “one church, many locations” approach. The growing list of Covenant campus locations include: Carrollton, Cross Roads, Texoma, Colleyville and McKinney.
www.covenantchurch.org

Compact Touch Screen Controller and CobraNet Audio I/O Card Debut Demo in London

London, UK -- (Sept 2011) -- At this year's PLASA Show, QSC is showing two new products which enhance the powerful capabilities of their successful Q-Sys™ integrated system platform. Both the new TSC-3 Controller and CCN32 CobraNet Audio I/O Card expand the offerings of the Q-Sys system, which has become the preferred choice for audio system control of large-scale venues including the hospitality, transportation, entertainment, worship and sports venue sectors.

The Q-Sys(tm) TSC-3 is an elegant touch screen controller which enables simple and cost-effective control for Q-Sys systems and other devices under Q-Sys control. The TSC-3 utilizes Q-Sys Designer software to create custom control panels (called User Control Interfaces or UCIs), with buttons, faders, custom navigation and other software tools including bitmaps and other graphical images, and then deploys those control panels to this interface. These UCIs can then be utilized to control any aspect of a Q-Sys system and other elements that are put under Q-Sys control including CD and DVD players, projectors, video switchers and other devices.

Designed to be wall-mounted and fit into a standard US 2-gang wall box, the TSC-3 employs Power over Ethernet (PoE) making it easy to install, and utilizes a Capacitive Touch surface so it is very intuitive for the end user to be able to control any part of a Q-Sys system.

QSC is also premiering the Q-Sys(tm) CCN32 CobraNet Audio I/O Card, which enables system bridging between Q-Sys and a CobraNet legacy platform. The CCN32 fits in either a Q-Sys Core or I/O Frame and provides up to 32 x 32 channels of CobraNet audio in/out of a Q-Sys system.

Designed specifically for those customers who have a very large networked legacy system, the CCN32 provides a very cost-effective means for a phased approach to bridge between an existing CobraNet platform and the conversion to the Q-Sys platform.

Both the products are expected to ship this July. The suggested retail price of the TSC-3 is $699 and the suggested retail price of the CCN32 is $2,999.

Q-Sys, the complete integrated system platform that encompasses everything from the audio input to loudspeakers, provides all the audio routing, processing, control and monitoring necessary for any facility while maintaining the audio quality and reliability QSC has come to be known for. Designed specifically for the rigorous requirements of large-scale applications, the power of Q-Sys has been demonstrated worldwide in a variety of applications, including stadiums and arenas, attractions and theme parks, performing arts venues, transportation hubs, legislative and judicial chambers, hotels and casinos, houses of worship, corporate campuses, and educational facilities.
Visit QSC Audio at at the Shure Distribution UK Stand, No. E34 PLASA 2011, Earls Court, London, 11 - 14 September.

We had to arrange distribution and transmission of audio signals across the large multi-zone territory of The Center, with low latency and undamaged sound quality, and ensure protection from both system and network errors. Full redundancy was crucial because the Center hosts international competitions

“The Q-Sys platform allowed us to complete both tasks successfully. We were aware that Q-Sys is new to the Russian market, but Mixart, QSC's Russian distributor, provided us with comprehensive consultancy and support which persuaded us to choose this solution. And we have never regretted that decision!”

Meanwhile the upgrade work at the Khanty-Mansiysk stadium continues, with the building of a new stand for spectators and reconstruction of the old ones to improve seating capacity. The final part of the construction will include two new video screens in the stadium and a new conference centre addition to the press centre, with a fully-featured two-floor pavilion.

East and West Coasts, USA - From Southern California all the way to Eastern Pennsylvania, a number of this summer's concert series sound providers have utilized the QSC WideLine Series line array to meet the sound reinforcement requirements presented by unique and challenging venues.

The Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA, which ranks among the top Southern California performance venues, hosted headliners this summer including Matchbox Twenty, Lady Antebellum, Alan Jackson, Daughtry and many others. This 4,500 seat outdoor venue, which features a combination of assigned floor seating, raised seating and bleacher seating, prides itself upon having first-rate sound and lighting systems, so that every audience member in every seat has the best experience. Star Way Productions of Murrieta, CA handles the sound for the summer concert series at Pechanga and chose QSC's WideLine-10s for their system.
"The WideLine system has become the widely accepted choice by the many national acts performing here," says Austin Hill, Senior Audio Engineer at Star Way. "The system and its components are extremely versatile and handle our shows of every size -- from 6 boxes to 60 -- and we get consistent clean, clear sound every time."
Star Way Productions also used the WideLine Series for the annual Temecula Balloon and Wine Festival, featuring two stages, one of which is sponsored by Pechanga. This summer's system is comprised of: 20 WL2102 boxes per side (Left & Right); 10 WL2102 boxes as a center vocal hang; 8 WL218-sw subs per side flown plus 10 WL218-sw subs per side, stacked. Star Way uses 6 K Series loudspeakers across the lip of the stage for front fill, and finally, QSC Basis to control, what Hill says is " a whole lot of QSC power going on. "
Meanwhile, at Costa Mesa's Pacific Amphitheatre, the WideLine Series have been in place for the 2011 summer season, with acts like Bob Dylan, Chris Isaak, Steve Miller Band, Melissa Etheridge, Selena Gomez, and Justin Beiber taking the stage. Escondido's Sound Image, the renowned design and integration company which offers their clients world-class systems, has handled the summer concert series here for nearly a decade.
With the Pacific Amphitheater's 15,000 outdoor spectator capacity stretched across the entire lawn area, Sound Image uses the WideLine Line array for its superior sound, light weight and ability to cover a wide area.
"The WideLine is by far one of the best sounding boxes out there. It packs a wallop and doesn't weigh very much, "says Gary Sanguinet, Audio Engineer at Sound Image. "This is an extremely wide venue and the WideLine is perfect as the center array, because they are low profile and small, and have 140 degree dispersion, so they cover the width that we need as well as the distance."

On the east coast, WideLines are also the array of choice for Philadephia's Mann Performing Arts Center. For the past four years, Clear Sound of Yeadon, PA has been providing QSC WideLine-10 Arrays for the summer concert series there.

"We actually got the contract at as the result of a shootout where we put our WideLines against a competitor, and the folks at the Mann Center chose the WideLines," says Clear Sound owner and president, Chris Dietze. "Sound quality and the size were the big factors. The house at Mann has front suspension points which are limited to 1,000 pounds each; the WideLine is the only system that can reach all the seats with good coverage and still meet the weight limit. And they sound great."

Clear Sound also uses the WideLine-10s for the summer concert series at the Dell Music Center (formerly Robin Hood Dell East), Mann's sister amphitheatre. A true uncovered amphitheatre with fixed seating for 5,000 plus lawn seating for 500, the Dell has featured a number of top acts this summer, with artists like Nancy Wilson, George Clinton, P Funk, Stephanie Mills and the Stylistics taking the stage. As Dietze explains, many of the artists themselves are impressed by the power of the system.

"At the Dell, we always have artists who arrive and expect to see a large PA, and they are looking all around for it. We have to point out where the WideLine is, "adds Dietze. "Then they are always astonished when they hear the sound that comes out of them."

About WideLine

The QSC WideLine-10 is a full range 3-way line array loudspeaker system designed for use in a wide variety of venues, ranging from ballrooms, theaters and nightclubs to concert halls, houses of worship and arenas. WideLine-10 features an open, natural sound quality and exceptionally wide 140 deg. horizontal coverage pattern - the widest of any line array system currently available. Both Wideline-10 and Wideline-8 Systems feature QSC's patented multiple aperture diffraction slot waveguide to achieve their broad horizontal coverage and a nearly ideal vertical line source.

Greensburg, PA- Word of Life Ministries, a non-denominational Christian church in Western Pennsylvania, recently upgraded its campus-wide audio systems with a broad range of QSC Audio loudspeaker products, line array systems, amplifiers and controllers.

The new audio systems throughout the venue installed in the church's main sanctuary, children's classroom, and cafe and youth center, were designed and installed by Penn, PA's Stormrider Sound and Lighting Design Systems, with installation assistance from Impact Audio, of Pittsburgh..The new audio equipment includes QSC AcousticDesign(tm) Series and K Series loudspeakers, an ILA Series Line Array with subwoofers, as well as CX and PowerLight (tm) Series amplifiers. SC28 and QSControl.net(tm) system controllers manage DSP, control, monitoring and distribution.

The main sanctuary at Word of Life is covered by flown left and right arrays, each comprising eight ILA Line Array WL2082-i enclosures, configured with two ILA Series WL118-sw subwoofers positioned behind them. Three PowerLight PL380 amplifiers power the low- and mid-frequency units, with a PL340 powering the high-frequency components. An SC28 System Controller provides system optimization. self-powered K10 two-way loudspeakers supply monitoring on the sanctuary's stage platform.

Finding the right line array system for the room was critical due to its asymmetrical floor plan, according to Stormrider Founder Stash Roberts. "Everyone involved, including the church's main decision-makers, selected the WideLine system for its coverage of the space following an onsite evaluation. We knew that because of the wide dispersion they'd be excellent for the room and offer more control," he says.

The Wave Walker Village, a children's classroom with bleacher seating and a village façade stage set, is outfitted with a pair of QSC AD-S82 loudspeakers located on either side of a giant screen. Three additional AD-S82s are integrated into the façade, along with an AD-S28Tw subwoofer. A second AD-S28Tw is located behind a grille in the wall, with CX Series amplifiers providing power to all the loudspeakers. The classroom's loudspeakers and amplifiers are networked via QSControl.net and under the control of a wall-mounted QSC NAC-100 Network Audio Controller. "It's so easy to use, even the kids can handle it," Roberts comments. "They can scroll through to the picture of the teacher on the touch screen, select it, and the teacher's mic is up and running."

Elsewhere on campus, the cafe features six AD-S82 speakers, affixed to the walls using QSC's revolutionary Intellidock(tm) intelligent mounting system. CX Series amplifiers provide power. "The system is designed for acoustic music acts," explains Roberts. "There are also TVs in there, and they hold conferences and so forth."

The youth center, which features a large stage flanked by two large screens, includes a pair of GP218-sw ground support subwoofers, powered by PowerLight PL380 amplifiers, supplementing the main speaker system. PowerLight amplifiers additionally power the main flown arrays, with PLX2 Series amplifiers supplying power to the stage monitor speakers. A custom matrix switcher designed by Stormrider Sound routes the eight monitor channels to 16 available positions onstage.

Roberts adds that he chose QSC Audio for their great customer service as much as for the exemplary sound quality and features of the products. "The resources that we have as a QSC customer are impeccable, "he says. "I can run plans by any of their design groups and they always reinforce what we are doing or suggest expandability options for our clients. I have always been able to get an answer from QSC whenever something is needed."

About Stormrider Sound and Lighting Design Systems
Stormrider SLDS is an independent consultation and installation service, which prides itself on giving clients the opportunity to be part of the development process without bias input.
