Never a Quiet Moment
At BD's Mongolian Barbeque in Naperville, Illinois, the cacophony of loud conversation along with cooks singing, shouting and even banging on gongs is as much a part of the dining experience as the food itself. But when Be Media®, a systems integration firm headquartered in El Segundo, California, was called in to do an audio-video upgrade, it posed a bit of a problem.
According to Kelly Clark, Be Media's Ohio-based Director of Sales and Marketing, "Music plays a vital role in the BD's Mongolian Barbeque experience. And as sound system designers, our challenge was to ensure that audio coverage was even and intelligible everywhere.
"However, at BD's, the emphasis is on loud before the music even starts, with ambient noise by itself up there so high it makes a sports bar seemtame by comparison.
Combine that with an open ceiling and tiled floors, with smoke and flames constantly coming from a large open grill, and the environment is anything but friendly when it comes to sound reinforcement."
Spectacular Sound Made to Order
Based on a successful relationship in working with QSC on similar projects, Kelly contacted them again for assistance designing a sound system for BD's that combined style, performance and easy installation in a single package.
For speakers, eight AD-S52T and six AD-S82 AcousticDesign weather-resistant, 2-way enclosures were specified. According to Kelly, "These full-range, surface mount devices with sleek styling brought quality sound to the application along with reliability and a rugged durability that was a must for this application."
A compact, 8-channel QSC CX 108V amplifier was then selected to complete the distributed system, which Kelly states "was intended to include components that would hold up to the demands placed on them for volume – plus the smoke, flames and heat produced by the grill.
"I'm happy to say we succeeded on all counts," he concludes, “and it wouldn't have been possible without QSC. We're doing things here with a hospitality music system that most people wouldn't think of, and it keeps on working – day in and day out."
