A Vertically Challenged Environment
When Big Valley Grace Community Church in Modesto, California, wanted to create an acoustic environment with more intimacy and a stronger sense of direct field energy, they turned to Michael Garrison Associates (MGA) based in Fresno, California, for help.
Having twice updated their system during the previous decade, MGA was familiar with the church's unique requirements, and their point man on the project, Brian Roggow, thought the suggestion of using a line array was on the right track. "The only problem," he points out, "was that their sanctuary wasn't an ideal space for most line array systems because of its low ceiling height."
Fortunately, Brian had recently heard a demonstration of QSC's ISIS WideLine array and was impressed by their unique 140 degree horizontal dispersion pattern and equally exceptional 55 Hz to 20 kHz frequency response. Coupled with a compact, lightweight design and captive flying hardware, he was convinced they would work for Big Valley.
Truly Praiseworthy Sound Working closely with QSC's system support team, Brian specified ten WideLine cabinets in a main configuration with three more used for downfills. A pair of QSC ModularDesign™ subwoofers were added for extended, low frequency support, with a rack of QSC CX amplifiers selected to power the system and integrated by QSControl.net, QSC's platform of networked digital products.
After several months of trouble-free use, Brian states that QSC's ISIS WideLine array "works amazingly well in this application, despite the room's low ceiling. Because of the cabinet's wide dispersion, we met the church's goals and then some. Coverage is excellent, we have considerably fewer hang points than before, and we were even able to get rid of the delay speakers formerly used in the upper balcony.
